Serving the residents of Windham since 1990, the Transfer/Recycling Station is owned and operated by the Town.
Our Mission Statement: "To provide an efficient and effective Solid Waste Transfer/Recycling Station for the residents of Windham with an ongoing commitment to improvement".
NOTICES TO RESIDENTS:
Because of handling issues, we would ask residents to contain shredded paper in a cardboard box or paper bag when when depositing it at the Transfer Station. This form of paper is very difficult to handle and contain in the single stream processing. We thank you for your cooperation and compliance.

NOTICE: Effective March 11, 2008, the Transfer Station will no longer accept commercial construction/demolition waste. All commercial entities should divert their C&D to an alternative disposal location. Residents may continue to bring their C&D in their own vehicle. If you have any questions, please contact the Station at 426-5102.

The Staff would ask that residents please dispose of "sharps" (hypodermic needles) in a secured container, and that the container be physically handed to a Station employee. We ask those residents using curbside pickup to not place sharps or any other medical waste into their waste streams. If such items are not disclosed to staff in person, there is risk of Station staff exposure to these hazardous materials. We ask for your cooperation in reducing this risk. If you have any questions, please contact the Station. Thank you for your assistance.

In an effort to limit "Out-of-Town" waste coming to the Windham Transfer/Recycling Station, we ask Windham residents to register with the Town and get a free auto sticker to identify their residency while at the Station. Because of logistics, it is very difficult to police the Station and ensure all the waste is generated in Windham. This Station is owned by Windham residents, and we need your assistance by participating in this simple identification process. You can receive a sticker at the Station or Town Clerk's Office. Thank you for your cooperation.

Please be sure to remove the metal frame from sleeper sofas and place the frame in the steel bin before disposing of the material part in the general trash. Sheetrock (drywall) and porcelain products (toilets, etc.) are considered demolition waste. We hope this notice will clarify any confusion.
**********
In an effort to reduce potential injuries, the Transfer/Recycling Station staff asks that residents, in particular our elderly residents, contact staff members to assist with unloading of any material that may cause physical injury or other ergonomic problems. We ask your help in reducing your personal risk and assistance in operating a safe facility. Thank you for your cooperation.

In the interest of safety, all children six (6) years of age and under are to remain in your vehicle while at the Transfer Station. There have been several near misses involving small children at the Station, and we ask that parents please be vigilant to ensure their children's health and safety while at the Station.
We also ask all residents to remove fuel tanks from equipment before disposing of items at the Transfer/Recycling Station. Our recycling vendors are prohibiting fuel tanks from their waste streams due to the potential hazards. We need to retain our recycling markets, and ask for the residents' cooperation in this effort.
Please remove and clean material from recyclable containers, (ie, beverage containers, glass food containers, etc.). Contamination of recyclables makes it difficult to properly handle the material, and causes a hygiene problem. Processors of recyclables would prefer "clean" or "non-contaminated" material, and most contaminated recyclables are rejected and sent to a landfill or incinerator (treated as garbage). Whenever possible, we ask that residents take a little extra time to clean the container. If your container is severely contaminated and cannot be cleaned, we would prefer it be disposed of in the conventional garbage waste stream at the Transfer Station.
GENERAL INFORMATION:
The Station provides solid waste disposal needs exclusively for the residents of Windham through a permit (window sticker) issued to each verified resident, or to a commercial hauler that has entered into a contractual agreement with the Town.
All commercial/industrial generated solid waste must be weighed and is subject to a disposal charge based upon the quantity and nature of the material.
As recycling is mandatory in Windham, source separation is required at the Station to ensure recyclable items are placed in the proper disposal areas. More information on the operation of the Station can be obtained by calling (603) 426-5102, or you may wish to review the Town's Solid Waste Ordinance. Also, brochures are available at the Transfer Station and Town Hall. An excerpt of acceptable materials can be found here.
Yard waste material should be deposited at the Marblehead Road Landfill site.
