HIGHWAY SAFETY MEETING

May 23, 2002

 

On May 23, 2002 , the Department Heads discussed the following request for highway safety improvements and made the following recommendations. 

Attendance: David Sullivan, Chief Bruce Moeckel, Chief Steve Fruchtman,  Al Turner, Al Barlow, Don Messier, Rex Norman, Eric DeLong, Jack McCartney, John Barrett, and Patrick Yatsevich.

HIGHWAY SAFETY ISSUES:

  • Dave Sullivan brought recommendation to change format of meetings to hold Highway Safety Committee (HSC) Meeting once per month or more if needed, and to hold Department Head Meeting once per month.

  • Dave Poulson moved to hold one management meeting per month and two HSC meetings, with the first Thursday for management and 2nd  & 4th Thursday for HSC. Seconded by John  Barrett. Passed unanimously.

Harris Road

  • Request from resident to post 20 MPH sign and “slow children” sign.

  • The Committee discussed the fact that State law does not allow the speed limit to be posted as low as 20 MPH and the committees’ standing position that “slow children” signs are unenforceable and give a false sense of security.

  • Mr. Barlow moved to deny the speed limit request. Seconded by Mr. DeLong. Passed unanimously.

  • Mr. Barlow moved to deny the slow children sign. Seconded by Mr. Fruchtman. Passed unanimously.

County Road

  • Request to place ”slow children” sign.

  • The Committee discussed the committees’ standing position that “slow children” signs are unenforceable and give a false sense of security.

  • Mr. DeLong moved to deny the slow children sign. Seconded by Mr. Barlow. Passed unanimously.
